John Haygarth (1740-1827) attended Sedbergh School, and then in the summer of 1756 he studied mathematics under the tutorship of John Dawson. he went on to St John’s college Cambridge as Hepplethwaite Scholar in 1759, but after three years decided to continue his medical studies at Edinburgh. After three years in Edinburgh, and some time studying in Leyden where he matriculated in 1765, he returned to Cambridge to graduate M.B. in 1766. In 1767 he was appointed Physician to the Chester Infirmary, where he kept detailed records and researched infectious deseases. Amongst his medical successes where the introduction of fever hospitals (isolation wards) to help prevent the spread of diseases, and the first recorded placebo experiment establishing the basis for modern clinical trials. Throughout his careeer he applied mathematical analysis to his records and research, and was able to establish the nature and distances over which infections could spread. In 1798 he moved to No. 15 The Royal Crescent in Bath, and was involved in the setting-up of the Bath Savings Bank. Although buried at Swainswick church, he was a lifelong friend of John Dawson and kept in touch with Garsdale though his nephew who looked after his affairs there.

Wedding-Rev Charles Higham & Emily Mary Sanders-Cheshunt 1887
Charles & Emily's wedding-Cheshunt July 13, 1887: Excerpted from "Of Myths and Ancestor Worship" by Adrian Higham, p.83: We have the group photograph of the wedding of Charles Higham to Emily Sanders in Cheshunt on Wednesday 13 July 1887.There they all are, the guests in their finery with the bridesmaids in their broad flowered hats and the other ladies in their bonnets. Behind the group there is somewhat incongruously a scaffold! On further inspection this has to be a hoist because the photo was taken in the only space easily available - the bride's father's builders yard. Frederick Felix Sanders was a builder of some substance who as part of his business maintained property in the district including Effingham Place, which the Bellamy family had owned for many years. Charles had first met Emily when he was visiting his uncle at the house. There are conflicting traditions of how he was received by the Sanders family. One story has it that Emily had already broken off an engagement but the other is that Frederick was not at all pleased at the prospect of a penniless curate courting his only daughter. The Sanders were a well established family in Cheshunt. In the churchyard there is tomb, a table-like sarcophagus, with a solid slate top on which Frederick had had the names recorded of his forbears for three generations back to Thomas Sanders M.D......
Marriage of Rev Charles WR Higham to Emily Mary Sanders, July 13, 1887: Excerpted from draft memoirs of James Richard Strachan Higham, Auckland New Zealand, email to Jim Carney, Jan 12, 2011: "Emily Higham nee Sanders was the daughter of a builder in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. The Sanders represented the Bellamy family interest in some property in the town, and when Charles visited them, he saw Emily making up a fire with her face was flushed with the heat, and decided she was the girl for him! But her father saw the impoverished Higham bound for the church as a poor prospect, and told him to come back when he had a proper job. He came back more frequently anyway and they eventually married. Over the years this led to a Sanders influx – Emily’s mother came to stay, and stayed on, and her brother (Harry John Sanders) took up residence with the Highams in South Africa while he and his family found their feet. They all turned up again in Liverpool, before leaving for Canada. Emily died in the 1927 flu epidemic, at 16 Leopold Road (it became no 50 later), where she was staying with her son Strachan. My brother Ted asked our father who the old man was in the bath upstairs, and Dad thought it was his father Charles’s ghost come to haunt the house where his wife had died."

HODGESON
George Hodgeson - The Dent Vampire
In 1621 Galileo invented the telescope, the Mayflower sailed from Plymouth and George Hodgeson was born in Dent dale. In 1715 George was buried in the corner of Dent Churchyard, that should have been the end of the story but, surprisingly, George began making regular appearances in and around Dent. The Dales are full of eccentric characters but this was undoubtedly more eccentric than usual. Stories began to circulate about George’s previously blameless life. A “friend” recalled that George enjoyed a daily glass of sheep’s blood as a tonic. A neighbouring farmer put about the story, shamelessly lifted from an old witch legend, that he had seen a black hare one day. Raising his gun he had shot and wounded the creature, followed its bloody trail to George’s door where, surprise, surprise, he had looked through the window to see George tending a shotgun wound. There was a lengthy town meeting and a decision was taken to exhume George and then take whatever action was deemed appropriate. Accordingly the sexton and his spade were summoned to the churchyard and, after some effort; George’s coffin was brought to the surface. The interiors of used coffins are rarely attractive and George’s was no exception. His skin was pink and healthy, his hair and nails had grown somewhat but he was undoubtedly dead – though not sufficiently dead for the citizens of Dent.
A new grave was dug at the church door, a stone laid and a brass stake driven through the corpse. The top of the stake is clearly visible. As a result of this treatment George has ceased to reappear, so far!.
